Good to know
What is the difference between Third Party Liability, Limited Casco, and Comprehensive car insurance?
In the Netherlands , third-party liability insurance (WA) is mandatory for every driver. With WA, you are insured for damage you cause to others or their property. This is the foundation of your car insurance, but you can extend the coverage for even greater peace of mind. Limited coverage also covers damage to your own car due to natural disasters such as hail, storms, lightning, floods, earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions. Those who opt for Full coverage (All Risk) are even more comprehensively insured: in addition to Limited coverage, you are insured for almost all unexpected events, damage due to your own fault or defects, accidents (even if they are your own fault), parking damage, skidding, overturning, ending up in water, and damage when towing your car to or from an inland vessel. Note: minor scratches or paint damage, and towing in other situations, are not covered.
What is the additional coverage for Passenger Damage Insurance?
With the Passenger Injury Insurance, the driver and all occupants of the car are insured in the event of a traffic accident.
This applies to:
- Personal injury
- Death
- Damage to personal belongings that are in, on or near the car (e.g. a bag, laptop or telephone).
The insurance applies to everyone who:
- Sits in an official seat in the car,
- Getting on or off, or
- Temporarily out of the car, for example to refuel, charge the battery, clean windows or help someone.
The coverage always applies in case of sudden and unexpected traffic accidents during the term of the insurance, regardless of who
is guilty. This way, you and your passengers are well protected, wherever you're going.
What is the additional coverage 'Free choice of repair company'?
With this coverage, you can have your car repaired at a repair shop of your choice, even if they're not in our network. This can be useful if, for example, you prefer to go to a local garage or if your car's make requires repairs to be done at a dealership. The advantage? You won't pay a higher deductible.
What is the additional Roadside Assistance cover?
This coverage insures you against breakdowns if your car is unable to drive. This applies both in the Netherlands and abroad, as long as you have Limited or Fully Comprehensive insurance.
What you get:
- emergency repairs, labor and recovery of your car, trailer or caravan.
- your car and luggage to a repair shop or an address in the Netherlands, and you and your passengers to a desired address.
- Like the wrong fuel or keys in a locked position? Covered once a year.
- If your car cannot be repaired within 24 hours, it will be covered for a maximum of 3 days in the Netherlands; abroad, it will be covered until the end of your trip.
- Additional accommodation costs, shipping costs for parts and telephone costs with the Helpline will be reimbursed.
Important:
- Always contact the Helpline first via the Rhion Insurance Line (24/7).
- Roadside assistance is not available in all situations; some costs or services are not covered.
What is the International Insurance Certificate (Green Card)?
The International Insurance Certificate shows you which countries your car insurance is valid in, along with the term and vehicle details. You can easily download it from our customer portal – save it to your smartphone or print it out, whichever is most convenient for you.
In the Netherlands and most European holiday destinations, the green card isn't mandatory, but it is practical to carry with you. A digital version or black-and-white printout is often sufficient.
Traveling to Albania, Bosnia, Iran, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Tunisia, or Turkey? Then an international proof of insurance is mandatory. Since January 1, 2025, it can also be digital or on plain paper.
Do you have a caravan or trailer? Then your car's green card usually applies to it as well. Only if it weighs more than 750 kilos and you're traveling to Germany, Poland, Portugal, Croatia, or Spain do you need separate proof. You can easily arrange this through your account.
What should I do when I sell my car?
You can easily report this change online via your account in the policy overview. The change date is the day the license plate was registered in the new owner's name. Already have a new car? Click on 'change' and easily enter your new car's details.
I bought a new car. How can I change my car insurance?
You can easily report the change yourself through your account. Have your new license plate and registration code ready. Go to "My insurance" and then "Change vehicle" for the car insurance policy you want to change.
Is my car insured with another driver?
Yes, the driver must have a valid driver's license and your permission to drive your car. Should an accident occur, it could affect your no-claims bonus, your premium, and possibly your deductible.
What is the no-claims scheme and what are claim-free years?
With the no-claims scheme, you benefit from a lower premium if you don't make a claim. The more claim-free years you have accumulated, the higher the discount on your premium. At the start of your insurance, we use the claim-free years you accrued with a previous insurer, via the Roy-data system, which all car insurers in the Netherlands use.
There are two main components: the no-claims table and the claims-free years table . The no-claims table determines the discount on your premium. Each claim-free period means you move up one step. The highest step is 24, good for an 80% discount; your claims-free period is also recorded afterward, but the step remains at 24.
The no-claims table shows how many no-claims years you've accrued and how much you might lose in the event of a claim. Each insurance year, we recalculate your premium and let you know your new no-claims threshold, how many no-claims years you have, and how much premium you'll pay.
Are you canceling your insurance? We'll pass on your actual claim-free years to Roy-data, so you can transfer them to your next policy.
Can I transfer my claim-free years to my child?
Yes, that's possible with a waiver . You can find this at the bottom of this page ('Read more?') and easily download it . Fill it out and send it to us via the contact page. It's important that your child is already listed as a regular driver on the policy and that they cannot carry over more claim-free years than the number of years they've held their driver's license.
How can I change or cancel my car insurance?
You can easily make the change yourself online through your account. Have you bought a new car and want to insure it immediately? Then find your license plate and registration code , go to 'My insurance' and select 'Change vehicle' for the insurance policy you want to change. Check immediately that all your information is still correct.
Am I insured if my driving license has expired?
You are not insured for damage that occurs while driving. Therefore, it's important that you always have a valid driver's license when driving your car.
My child mainly drives. Should I report this?
Yes, please let us know via the customer portal. If your child primarily drives your car, they will become a regular driver , and the insurance premium will change, as young people have a different premium. By letting us know, you can be sure everything is properly arranged and avoid any surprises in the event of damage.
Is my car insured for business use and special events?
Damage resulting from business use , loading, or unloading of the car (such as a driving school car, taxi, or courier services), or car rental is not covered. Volunteer work or non-profit social use, such as transporting someone to the doctor or hairdresser, is not covered and is covered. Damage during competitions or special events like car shows is also excluded.
Can I use my private car for volunteer work, and is it insured?
Yes! Your private car is insured for volunteer work and non-profit social use. This applies, for example, to delivering meals or transporting people with reduced mobility to the doctor, hairdresser, or grocery shopping.
I'm not driving my car temporarily. Can I (temporarily) cancel my insurance?
Are you temporarily not using your car and is it in the garage? Then you can have the registration suspended with the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority). From that point on, you can cancel the insurance, because the third-party liability obligation no longer applies. However, we recommend keeping the car insured during the suspension, as damage can also occur in the garage. Note: a suspension is valid for a maximum of one year per application with the RDW.
Where can I find the reporting code for my car?
The reporting code can be found on your vehicle registration certificate, below the license plate. The reporting code consists of four digits, namely the last four digits of your vehicle's chassis number.
When does car insurance end?
Your car insurance ends automatically or we can terminate it for you in certain situations. For example, if you permanently move abroad, your car gets a foreign license plate, is parked abroad for more than 180 days, is sold, is technically a total loss, or six months after the policyholder's death. We may also terminate the insurance with two months' notice if the car's use changes, such as business use or a change in regular driver.
It's important that you inform us as soon as possible, and no later than within 14 days, via the customer portal. If you sell or cancel your vehicle, please also send us a copy of the certificate of indemnity within one month. After deregistering with the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) or terminating your insurance, the car may no longer be driven on public roads; otherwise, you will not be insured, and any damage will be your own responsibility.
What important changes should I, as a customer, always report within 14 days?
Are there any significant changes that could affect your car insurance? Please let us know as soon as possible, within 14 days at the latest. Changes almost always affect your premium and/or coverage. Consider, for example:
- You buy another car or sell your current car
- Your car is stolen
- Your car's fuel is changing
- Your car has been converted, for example into a camper van
- You are moving
- The use of the car or the regular driver changes
- The policyholder dies (experienced people report this)
- The regular driver is given a driving ban
- Other important information that you know is important to us
By informing us promptly, your insurance will always be well-suited to your situation.
How do I build up claim-free years?
For each consecutive year you're insured and haven't claimed a claim, you accumulate one claim-free year. The more claim-free years you have, the lower your premium! If you have a claim, you may lose claim-free years, depending on the situation. This way, your premium always stays in line with your driving behavior.
What determines the premium amount of my car insurance?
We determine your premium based on several factors, such as the make, type, and year of manufacture of your car, the fuel type, the weight, the desired coverage, your address and age or that of the regular driver, the number of claim-free years, and the list price of the car.

I have damage due to vandalism. Is this covered?
Damage caused by vandalism is covered if you have Third-Party Liability + Comprehensive (All Risk) coverage. Think of chipped mirrors, punctured tires, or scratches on the paint. Good news: if you or your passengers weren't at fault, your no-claims discount remains intact.
If you don't know who caused the damage, but it was another motor vehicle, or the perpetrator is uninsured, you may be eligible for compensation through the Guarantee Fund. More information is available on their website.
How do I cancel my car insurance?
You can cancel your insurance any day by sending a letter or email to us or through VKG. The insurance ends on the day you specify. If your cancellation is received after that date, the insurance will end on the day the cancellation is received.
